Default Chevy Volt MPV5 Concept Debuts at Beijing Auto Show

Chevrolet has just released details of the new Volt MPV5 Concept car, which debuts today at the 2010 Beijing Auto Show. Based on the Volt's platform, this 5-seater adds plenty of functionality (not to mention style), as well as including the Volt's revolutionary range-extender Voltec powertrain.

Despite the MPV in the name, Chevy still refers to this car as a crossover. Compared to the Volt, this MPV5 Concept has a wheelbase that is just 15mm longer, with a 181mm (7-inches) longer overall length. Its also wider and taller than the Volt by 73mm (2.9-inches) and 182mm (7.2-inches), respectively. This allows for added passenger and cargo room with a total of 30.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats and a total of 62.9 cubic feet with the rear seats folded flat.

Like the Volt, power comes from an electric motor and lithium-ion battery with the gasoline engine adding additional range. Chevy claims a pure electric 32 mile range on an EPA city cycle, with an additional 300 miles once the gasoline engine kicks in.

With the launch of the original Volt set for later this year, GM is using concepts like the MPV5 to show that the Voltec propulsion system is adaptable to different platforms many of which we are likely to see in the years to come.
